Why Fecon masticators are better than Hydro-Axes.

The end result achieved by using Fecon Bull-Hog® masticators is superior to other clearing methods for a number of reasons:

Less site disturbance

A very common site preparation method in Alaska is to bulldoze trees and topsoil into "slash" piles and then burn or haul away those piles.

Mulching reduces the cost of hauling waste material because mulch can be more easily skimmed off of a work site than standing trees can. This allows more of the existing substrait to be preserved for use during the remainder of the project.

Lower Fire Risk

The conventional method of using a bulldozer to make slash piles and then burn them is dangerous. When slash piles are burned it is not uncommon for them to continue burning internally for long periods of time. Burned slash piles have even been known to ignite their surroundings after an entire winter of apparent dormancy.

Creates a versatile surface

Clearing with Bull Hog® masticators creates a versatile surface perfect for many activities including running, cycling, horseback riding, and many others.

Chip size can be tailored to specific applications, and safe, convenient trails can be created without damaging the surrounding forest.

More environmentally friendly

Bull-Hog® masticators use a fraction of the diesel fuel used by alternative methods and the mulch they produce actually benefits the surrounding trees when thinning undergrowth or making trails.

Mulching also has the added advantage that the end product is not as susceptible to soil erosion as other clearing methods.

How Fecon Bull Hog® Masticators Work

Fecon Bull Hog masticator heads are both simple and effective.

The head consists of a horizontal drum with double tipped carbide teeth mounted on it, two hydraulic drive motors to turn the drum, and a chassi to hold the above components. Click here for a larger schematic.

In addition, a "pusher bar" is mounted on top of the head to assist in pusing over trees.
